But its roots go much deeper. From the early 20th century, gold mining gradually increased, reaching a historic peak in the second half of the 1960s. At that time, South Africa accounted for over 70% of global production of this precious metal. With vast quantities of gold at its disposal, the idea arose to produce one-ounce investment coins – Krugerrands. The goal behind their creation was to strengthen South Africa's position in the global market and promote private gold ownership. The first Krugerrand was minted in 1967 in Germiston, where it is still minted today. But where did the name Krugerrand even come from? It's a combination of two parts. The first, Kruger, comes from the surname of Paul Kruger, one of the most important South African politicians of the second half of the 19th century. He was the leader of the aforementioned Boer resistance against the British and the longest-serving president of the South African Republic. The second part, the word "rand," is the name of the South African currency, referring to the mountain range where gold deposits are located. The obverse features the image of Paul Kruger. It was designed in 1892 for the first issue of the Pond, the currency of the South African Republic at the time. Since the country did not have its own mint at the time, the minting was commissioned to the Berlin Mint. Kruger's bust was designed by German medalist Otto Schultz. The same design was used on the first Krugerrand in 1967 and has remained unchanged to this day. Around it are the inscriptions "Suid Afrika" and "South Africa," the commonly used unofficial name for the country of South Africa. The reverse of the coin features a springbok antelope, although everyone calls it simply an antelope. The legend around it indicates the pure gold content, the currency name, and the year of mintage. The Krugerrand is one of the best-selling gold bullion coins in Poland. It weighs 33.93 grams, slightly heavier than other popular one-ounce gold coins. This is because it is not minted in pure gold. To contain an ounce of pure gold, its weight is increased accordingly. Initially, Krugerrands were issued only as one-ounce coins, but since 1980, smaller fractions have also been produced – 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and for several years even 1/50 of an ounce. Silver versions of the coin are also currently produced. Where does the distinctive reddish color come from? This is due to a small amount of copper, which makes the coin slightly harder and more scratch-resistant. This is one reason why it may be a better choice than other one-ounce coins. Interestingly, the color of Krugerrands has changed slightly over the years. The newest ones are lighter than the first issues. Apparently, the copper addition, or rather the quality or smelting technique, may have varied slightly over the years. But perhaps the most important factor in recommending the Krugerrand is its recognition. It is by far the most recognizable gold coin in the world. This makes selling it easy. Whether you travel to Germany, Madagascar, or South America, you'll always find a dealer or a place where you can exchange it for cash. Another advantage of its popularity is its attractive price. Krugerrands are typically available at a slightly lower price than other one-ounce coins, though they are by no means inferior. The Krugerrand is a true classic among bullion coins. It quickly gained immense popularity worldwide and remains one of the most frequently purchased gold coins to this day. Of course, they are available on our website at numigold.pl
