Stem cells Stem cells are the cells that are growing in the bone marrow with the unique ability to develop into specialized cell types in the body. In the future, they may be used to replace cells and tissues that have been damaged or lost due to disease. It helps the cells or tissue to regenerate. What type of stem cell is required for ovarian stimulation? No. Currently, there are no specific stem cells that might help in Ovarian stimulation. The haematologist (A doctor who specializes in the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases) prepares a very special layer of buffy coat is taken and injected inside the ovary with the hope that the stem cell which is necessary will regenerate or will rejuvenate the ovary and will do its work. Is stem cell proven treatment for ovarian stimulation? It's an experimental therapy that can be attempted on trial in women with very low AMH. If its experimental does it offer any benefits to women undergoing this treatment? Yes. Does provide benefits to women undergoing this treatment. In 20% of women, this treatment is going to work wonders. Does this therapy have practical results? Approximately 5-10% of women become pregnant naturally, within 2-3 months following this therapy. The rest start responding to ovarian stimulation when IVF is being attempted. Who can undergo Autologous stem cell therapy? There are strict criteria when it comes to enrolling for autologous stem cell therapy, those are women who are less than 39. These are the women who have very low AMH of less than 0.4 or women who have antral follicle count below 3. Preferably women who have not had any ovarian surgery in the past. How painful is this procedure? Stem cell extraction can be done from waist bone. It is done under local anaesthesia and its a painless procedure. After that, the cells are taken into a laboratory for processing and through keyhole laparoscopic surgery which takes approx. 20 minutes to put a camera through the navel inside the umbilicus to guide the stem cell inside the ovary which doctors select for transfer. Follow up is done for 2 months. Does it increase the IVF success rate of AMH Value? It does not increase AMH value nor does it increase the IVF success rate. It enhances the chances of getting good quality and quantity of eggs following ovarian stimulation. This therapy is associated with any form of rejection. Autologous stem cell therapy is a very safe and standardizes the procedure. Women with ovarian failure where there is high FSH and very Low AMH and they may or may not be menstruating, or women who are above 41 and have extremely low AMH if Autologous stem cell therapy is tried for them the chances of benefiting with this therapy is around 5-6%.
