It debuted in Japan in 2001 and in North America and Europe in 2002. An upgraded version for the Xbox followed in 2002 in North America and 2003 in Japan and Europe. The game's story, set in 1986, follows siblings Miku and Mafuyu Hinasaki as Mafuyu goes missing in the haunted Himuro Mansion while searching for a famous novelist. Miku embarks on a quest to find him, uncovering the mansion's dark secrets and battling hostile ghosts with a special camera. Development began after Tecmo acquired PlayStation 2 hardware, with the project initially codenamed "Project Zero." Inspired by spiritual experiences, the game was created by Makoto Shibata and producer Keisuke Kikuchi to deliver a terrifying gaming experience. It received positive reviews upon release and has spawned several sequels since its debut.
