John TAVENER with Lucette Verboven. Saving my soul!

Als kind kwam hij onder de indruk van muziek in 'heilige ruimtes' en hij begon te componeren omdat hij in zijn muziek de eeuwige waarheid wilde vinden. De doorbraak kwam er door zijn vriendschap met The Beatles. Op de begrafenis van prinses Diana maakte zijn prachtige compositie 'Song for Athene' een overweldigende indruk. In veel van zijn composities staat het mysterie van de dood centraal. 'Ik schrijf om mijn ziel te redden', zo vertelt hij aan Lucette Verboven in dit intrigerend interview in Dorset. As a child he became fascinated with music in ‘sacred spaces’. In his compositions he searched for the perennial truth. His friendship with the Beatles was a stimulating one and he did have his share of a turbulent life. At the funeral of Prinses Diana, his composition ‘Song for Athene’ intensely resonated with the public.
