The Purpose of the Separate Self
Is it possible to free yourself from the apparent limitations of the separate self so that you can truly live as infinite consciousness? Rupert says: ‘Yes, it is possible. The nature of the knowing with which we know our experience is infinite – but in order to see itself as a world, consciousness has to ignore or forget itself and localise itself as a finite mind. That’s why we think, “I, this temporary finite mind on the inside, is looking at a world made out of matter on the outside.” But that’s a complete illusion. ‘Our thinking-perceiving faculties are like a screen that separates the perceiver from the perceived, the knower from the known. But this division is just brought about by the act of thinking and perceiving. So, if you, consciousness, remove thinking and perceiving from your experience, all that’s left is your knowledge of yourself, the awareness of being.’ *This video is from one of Rupert’s in-person retreats at The Vedanta, 15–22 November 2024.
