Vom Klassenzimmer in die Kalahari (360° - GEO Reportage)

Twelve Namibian students from the capital, Windhoek, are following in the footsteps of their role models, Charles Darwin and Alexander von Humboldt. They are embarking on an expedition through the inhospitable Kalahari desert trails – to learn more about their country and to discover its strengths and limitations. They come from both impoverished and privileged backgrounds. The expedition is led by EduVentures, a non-profit organization of Namibian and international scientists. The researchers aim to inspire young Namibians with a passion for natural sciences and provide them with an education, regardless of their parents' financial means. Divided into three teams, they will traverse the bushland, confronting the harsh living conditions and documenting their findings for the National Museum in Windhoek. Along the way, they will encounter poisonous scorpions and the ancient San people, who still lead a traditional way of life, unimaginable to the children of Namibia's modern capital. For nine days, the 360° GEO Reportage team will set up a classroom in the Kalahari with students and scientists. The nine-day research trip is being organized by EduVentures, a consortium of German, Namibian, and South African scientists, on behalf of the National Museum of Windhoek. Their goal: to inspire young people from all social backgrounds about their own, unfamiliar country. The Namibian Bushman Country presents a real challenge to the participants' physical fitness. For days, they trek through the thorny, scorching Kalahari. Beauty has to get used to sleeping in the wilderness, and Leandro spends his nights collecting nocturnal scorpions. By the end of their journey, they even befriend the San, one of the last remaining indigenous tribes living in a traditional way. What is life like with strictly rationed water, poisonous scorpions, and almost unbearable heat? What impressions will they take from this inhospitable region back to their modern lives, and what insights about nature and themselves will they gain? This documentary follows them on their adventure as they search for a more authentic way of life in the wilderness.
