A saffron-robed priest lifts a towering multi-tiered brass lamp high, flames dancing as thousands of devotees clap and chant along the crowded ghats. You narrate in relaxed travel-vlog style: This is the soul of Varanasi, Modis own constituency, the eternal Kashi that draws millions. But behind the lights, a different story unfolds. You cut to a handheld walk through the expanded Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor and its extensions. Wide polished pathways look impressive, packed with pilgrims. The project boosted religious tourism, yet nearby Dal Mandi shows half-demolished shops and rubble. This is the reality of land acquisition: 187 buildings marked for a 650-metre road widening under a 224 crore project to ease pilgrim access. Some owners received compensation; others raised concerns over fair process. No major public buses or metro from the government, only e-rickshaws zigzagging through congestion. Pilgrims bargain with drivers while stuck in the same old chaos. It is religious tourism on steroids, but basics like decent roads and clean transport are missing. This is selective development. Faith is real, but when development picks temples over people, arrests target one communitys meal while ignoring sewage, and leaders speeches stoke us-versus-them fire, that is not tolerance.
