A group from Bali visited ancestors at the Majapahit Temple in Trowulan, Mojokerto, East Java, on May 31, 2026. MAJAPHIT TEMPLE: SIVAWA-BUDHIST BELIEF The Sivawa-Buddhist belief has existed since the Singasari period of the 11th century. It was first adopted in the Indonesian archipelago during the Majapahit era, which successfully united the entire archipelago with "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Tanhana Dharma Mangruwa." After Majapahit collapsed in the 15th century, 1500 AD, the Sivawa-Buddhist belief became less prominent in Java. However, on the island of Bali, untouched by other religious traditions, Sivawa-Buddhist beliefs persisted among the descendants of Majapahit. The Sivawa-Buddhist belief is a form of respect for ancestors. In ancient times, the deceased were cremated and their ashes scattered in rivers or the sea, so they could return to the realm of Mokswa, or the One Supreme God. The origin of the Shiva-Buddhist unity dates back to the Majapahit era, when the ancestral worship of Bhatara Brahma, a Shiva-based king, married a Buddhist Chinese princess, and this became the forerunner of the Majapahit Kawitan. Previously, Shiva and Buddhism were separate, with Borobudur Temple specifically dedicated to Buddhism, Prambanan Temple specifically to Shiva, etc. Since the Majapahit era, the Shiva-Buddhist temples have become a single Shiva-Buddhist temple complex. The Shiva-Buddhist faith was embraced by the king, his family, and some of his subjects. The king was personally called Vishnu or Vishnu-Buddha. Therefore, the Shiva-Buddhist faith is the ancestor worship of the Majapahit Kawitan because it was during the Majapahit era that this belief spread throughout the archipelago, as the kings and their families were Shiva-Buddhists. This is evidenced by the fact that each Majapahit family certainly had a Majapahit Kawitan ancestral shrine. Ancestral shrines can be called graves, but only their spirits, as the deceased are cremated and the ashes are scattered at sea. For example, in Bali, almost every home has a spirit shrine/grave. Chinese, Japanese, etc., when the deceased is cremated, a place of worship is created at home. All families, regardless of religion, still pray and honor their ancestors, just as they would visit a grave. The Shiva-Buddhist faith in the Reformation era is actually a personal one, as it is not a religion that attracts people or creates teachings, etc. It is simply to unite families who now adhere to various religions. They can only unite in front of their ancestors, but generally, they are different, or "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Tanhana Dharma Mangruwa."
