From holding in the visual landing pattern to executing a perfect 3-wire trap, this video takes you through the entire process of landing a tactical jet on a moving ship. This video was filmed with permission in 2017, somewhere in the western Pacific Ocean. The video begins with me holding low in the visual landing pattern, where I'll explain the critical factors involved in sequencing in form the stack to the overhead. But as you’ll see, things don’t always go according to plan. I’ll walk you through the decision to switch to the spin pattern, a procedure that is sometimes necessary in the fast-paced airspace around the carrier. After we "spin it", I’ll execute a textbook overhead break and you’ll experience the rush of a perfect 3-wire trap, where we come to an immediate, controlled stop on the flight deck. After the trap, you’ll see how we taxi the jet across the packed flight deck, maneuvering through tight spaces while interacting with the flight deck Directors, who guide the aircraft to its parking spot. The coordination between pilots and the crew on the flight deck is an incredible display of precision and teamwork, ensuring that each move is safely and quickly. This is an in-depth look at carrier landing operations like you've never seen before—from the complexity of the approach and landing, to the detailed flight deck taxi and parking procedures. It’s a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on the life of a Naval Aviator, capturing the challenges and adrenaline of landing and parking a jet aboard a busy aircraft carrier. I'm just happy to be here.
