Normandy: The Largest Amphibious Landing in Military History The Normandy landings were the largest amphibious landing in military history. Launched by the Allies on June 6, 1944, from Britain, they landed on the Normandy coast in northwestern France to open a new front against Germany during World War II. More than two million soldiers and 300,000 military vehicles participated. The Normandy landings established a foothold in western France, paving the way for the liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and subsequently, the advance towards Berlin. In the latter half of 1943, the military balance of power began to shift in favor of the Allied forces (primarily the United States, Britain, the Soviet Union, and the French Resistance led by Charles de Gaulle) at the expense of the Axis powers (primarily Germany and Italy), especially after the battles of Stalingrad and El Alamein in Egypt. Allied forces managed to seize Sicily and opened a front in southern Italy. To the east, the Soviet Red Army made steady gains after the Battle of Stalingrad and advanced into Ukraine and Poland, encouraging local resistance movements in Poland, Hungary, and Greece to become more actively involved in the fight against Germany and its allies. At this stage, the political leadership of the Allied nations began to recognize the protracted nature of the war and the consequent need to accelerate the pace of military action to prevent growing discontent within public opinion in Europe and the United States, which was beginning to express its resentment of the war's brutality and enormous human cost. On November 28, 1943, the leaders of the major Allied powers (the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union) met in a trilateral summit in Tehran, Iran, to discuss the future strategy for confronting the Axis powers. They decided to open a new front in Western Europe for two reasons: to alleviate public frustration with the war's protracted nature and to divert Germany's efforts to relieve pressure on the Eastern Front, where the Soviet army was facing the German army almost alone. General Dwight Eisenhower (later President of the United States) was appointed commander of the operation, with British General Bernard Montgomery (hero of the North African campaign and the Battle of El Alamein) as his deputy. Troops were mobilized from the United States, Canada, Australia, Asia, and France's African colonies. In just six months, the Allies amassed two million soldiers and 300,000 tanks and armored vehicles. This massive mobilization placed a heavy burden on Britain, already exhausted by three years of German rocket and air bombardment. British authorities were forced to evacuate entire towns to accommodate the incoming troops. The recruits underwent intensive and varied training courses. The attack plan was shrouded in secrecy, with its initial details confined to a select group of officers who were placed under house arrest at military bases. Their movements and personal correspondence were monitored to prevent leaks to German intelligence. The operation's command also devised a deceptive plan, leaking its details to German intelligence, indicating that the attack would target Calais in the far northwest of France. This seemed logical given its proximity to Britain on the European mainland. Consequently, Germany reinforced its defenses around Calais while relatively neglecting the areas to its south. The landing plan involved transporting a massive force by sea (287,000 troops), with 156,000 paratroopers to be deployed before their arrival to secure the six designated, largely deserted landing beaches. 9,500 military aircraft were tasked with protecting the massive naval convoy from attacks by German submarines and aircraft. The Offensive The offensive, codenamed "Operation Overlord," began at midnight on June 6, 1944, a day later than originally planned due to adverse weather conditions. 156,000 paratroopers were dropped onto six landing beaches as part of the first phase of the offensive, codenamed "Neptune." The paratroopers engaged in direct combat with German forces, who were surprise...
