“Matimyas mabuhay sa sariling bayan/ Mapagmahal dito ang sinag ng araw…” Bienvenido Lumbera adapts Jose Rizal’s “Awit Ni Maria Clara” in Noli Me Tángere: The Musical as a dialogue between Maria Clara (Cris Villonco) and Crisostomo Ibarra (Mark Bautista). An image of an idyllic Philippine landscape is ideated, and we see our singers placing themselves fondly into what our lands would look like if unsundered by or recovered from colonial and imperial rule. The CCP Channel pays tribute with the release of the Bienvenido Lumbera Collection a selection of excerpts from shows penned by the National Artist for Literature.
