Mark 3A Aircraft Navigational Plotting Board (1933) Part 3: Tornich's Radius of Action

To celebrate the first anniversary of the Green Needle Aviation YouTube channel, this video demonstrates Mary Tornich's graphical method of determining "radius of action from a fixed base" on Philip Dalton's 1933 "Aircraft Navigational Plotting Board." For more information on the Mark 3A, see parts 1 (   • Mark 3A Aircraft Navigational Plotting Boa...  ) and 2 (   • Mark 3A Aircraft Navigational Plotting Boa...  ). Tornich's ingenious method skips much of the math and intermediate calculations needed to determine how far an aircraft can fly from a fixed based and return with a given amount of fuel (given information about the prevailing winds). As shown in the video, this involves drawing 5 vectors and then simply performing a single multiplication. 00:00 – 1. Introduction (and thank you) 01:10 – 2. Radius of Action Problem 01:46 – 3. Conclusion I'm truly grateful for everyone who watched this channel of the past year. Thanks to everyone who subscribed, shared a video, left feedback, etc. There are many interesting things to come in the forthcoming year, including more flight computers and other navigation related topics.
