We then spent the night right on the mine grounds, and in the morning we set off for the most dangerous part of this journey – we descended underground and walked through a tunnel that goes deep beneath the seabed. This is where coal was once mined for Japan's industry. During our exploration, we saw abandoned residential areas, a miners' training center, old equipment, documents, machinery, and rooms that had hardly been visited since the mine's closure. Ikeshima Island has become a true time capsule, offering a glimpse into what a modern ghost town looks like decades after its inhabitants left.
