The city of Este has been inhabited since very ancient times: already in the Iron Age, in fact, it was the main settlement of the ancient Venetians or Paleoveneti, who developed the city, making the economy flourish thanks to exchanges with neighboring civilizations, but also with the Greeks and Romans. In the early Middle Ages, Este was included in the kingdom of the Ostrogoths. Later the village was annexed to the Byzantine Empire, which held power over the Venetian territories only for a few decades, since already at the end of the sixth century it was supplanted on site by the Lombards. After the 11th century the city was repopulated around the castle built by the Marquis Alberto Azzo II d'Este in about 1056 and who moved his residence there in 1073. Este too was one of the places affected by the troubled human and historical events that took place in Veneto between the 11th and 13th centuries. At first it became one of the numerous properties of the various members of the Ezzelini family, among which the most famous was Ezzelino III da Romano. Ezzelino III da Romano, ally of Frederick II of Swabia, conquered Este twice (1238 and 1249), and in doing so severely damaged the marquis castle; in the meantime the Este family had moved their residence to Ferrara (1239), a city that would become their new capital. After the death of Ezzelino, in a regional panorama that saw Scaligeri, Carraresi and Visconti opposing, Cangrande della Scala (also Ghibelline) appeared on the Atestine scene, who destroyed the castle in 1317. In 1339, Ubertino da Carrara, lord of Padua, he had the castle rebuilt as it is today. In 1405 the city spontaneously submitted to the Venetian Republic to escape the control of the Paduans and their clashes with the Veronese. Under the Venetian rule it experienced a period of great prosperity, flourishing in the economy, culture and art, in a process that was interrupted only by the plague of 1630. Under Venetian rule (1405-1797), Este became a prosperous settlement. Later the Venetian Republic was conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte, who ceded all its territories to the Hapsburg Empire: therefore, the Euganean town also became part of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. From 1850 to 1853 it was the seat of an Austrian military commission, with the aim of eradicating the brigandage that spread in the territory after the uprisings of 1848-49. In 1866 Este, with the Veneto, was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. After the annexation, emigration increased considerably here as in the whole region. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many poets visited the Atestine city: among them the names of George Byron, Percy Shelley and Ugo Foscolo stand out.
