In the Gospel of Mark 10:32-45, Jesus announces his passion and death for the third time, but immediately afterward, James and John ask him to sit at his right and left in glory. Mark deliberately places this request in contrast with the announcement of the cross: a discordant note that reveals how far the disciples are from understanding the Father's plan. They call him "Master," but in the Gospel of Mark, this title almost never corresponds to total adherence to Jesus. Fr. Luca Arzenton emphasizes Jesus' response, which asks with heavenly simplicity: "What do you want me to do for you?" He seems willing to accept, but when he hears their demands, he corrects them: "You do not know what you are asking." The point is crucial: if our desires, thoughts, and plans are not aligned with the Father's will, what we ask will not happen. Following Jesus means walking behind him, not ahead of him. And when a disciple truly walks behind the Master, his desires are transformed and aligned with those of the Father, and then his prayer is answered because he asks for what God himself is already preparing.
