Located in the Lot department, this iconic site rises majestically, its castle overlooking the various levels clinging to the cliff between the Alzou stream and the Causse de Gramat plateau. The surrounding area offers a wealth of treasures, with the plateau and the valleys of the Alzou and Ouysse rivers. The Calvary hill is situated in the northern valley, behind the sanctuaries. A scenic landscape, it ascends in switchbacks along a stone path clinging to the rock face or, in some sections, overhanging the void. The slopes are densely planted with local species: oaks and walnut trees, creating a cool, shady atmosphere. The path is paved and cemented for most of its length, occasionally forming steps. Along the way, there are caves (such as the Grotto of the Nativity) and other features such as colonnades. As early as 1105, Pope Paschal II mentioned the pilgrimage "to the Blessed Virgin Our Lady of Rocamadour." Rocamadour was then one of the four holy sites of Christendom, along with Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and Jerusalem. In 1152, to cope with the growing number of pilgrims, Géraud d'Escorailles, Abbot of Saint-Martin-de-Tulle, undertook the construction of a sanctuary on the cliffside. Seven years later, Henry II Plantagenet came to thank the Virgin for his healing. In 1166, while digging a grave, a perfectly preserved body was discovered nearby. Attributed to Saint Amadour, it was placed in the present-day crypt that bears his name. Miracles accumulated: 126 were authenticated and recorded by 1172. Pilgrims flocked from all over Europe. In 1244, Saint Louis and his mother, Blanche of Castile, came to pray to Our Lady. In 1562, during the Wars of Religion, the Huguenots pillaged and burned the sanctuary, sparing neither the saint's relics nor the city. The inhabitants saved some bones from the flames, placing them in a reliquary that remained hidden for several years. Reduced to a local activity in the following centuries, and despite Louis XIII's confirmation of the authority of the Bishops of Cahors over the sanctuary by a judgment in April 1643, the pilgrimage declined. Revolutionary records document the ruin of the buildings, which were not restored until 1842, at the initiative of the Bishops of Cahors. The project was entrusted to Abbot Chevalt. Built starting in the 11th century, with most of its religious buildings dating from the 12th century, this complex encompasses the access staircase, a forecourt, a basilica, a crypt, and seven chapels, one of which houses a 12th-century Black Madonna. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises several historical monuments that have been listed and registered multiple times. In 2013, the sanctuary celebrated its millennium with a major jubilee year.
