They consolidated their power under Louis XIV and perished under the sword of the French Revolution. The history of this family dates back to the Middle Ages, in a small castle where they built power near the French Houses. They seized the opportunity in the midst of religious upheaval between Catholics and Protestants, when the Valois were left without male offspring and, thanks to a rather opportune marriage, took the seat of French power. Their beginnings were not easy, and they were even victims of attacks and severe revolts. But they managed to consolidate their power under Louis XIV, the famous Sun King, who paved the way for French absolutism and conquered the Spanish possessions for his grandson. The Sun King's heirs, Louis XV I and Louis XVI, enjoyed the fruits of absolute power, but also suffered constant opposition from parliaments. During the 18th century, they would suffer something even more powerful: the Enlightenment movement, a modern movement that the kings themselves felt strongly about. Today we turn to the French Bourbons, the dynasty that rose to absolute power thanks to the Enlightenment, but it was the same movement that ultimately decapitated them from France. #history #france #sunking
