He has been a columnist for Corriere della Sera since 1995 and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times since 2013. He was Italy Correspondent for The Economist (1996-2003). In 2004, in Brussels, he was named "European Journalist of the Year." He is the author of 16 books, some translated into fourteen languages, others New York Times bestsellers. He adapted "Life Is a Journey" (2014) into a stage play (which he performed alongside Marta Rizi and Elisabetta Spada). In 2015 and 2016, he created, wrote, and hosted "The Grass Is Here" (Rai 3). He has worked for Sky Italia and La7. He has worked as a foreign correspondent in London, Moscow, and Washington, DC. He has taught at the Walter Tobagi School of Journalism at the University of Milan since 2010. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2001, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the title of Officer of the British Empire, and in 2011, he was named Commander of the Italian Republic.
