However, in most of the interpretations she is portrayed as ferocious and evil. She is the mother of the world and the treasure-house of compassion. She is considered as the primordial mass from which all life arouse. Goddess Maha Kali (literally translated as Great Kali) is the Goddess of Liberation. She is known as the preserver of Earth, but due to her destructive powers, She is also known as “Dark Mother.” As the Goddess of Liberation, She and her counterpart Lord Shiva grant moksha to their followers by removing the illusion of the ego.
