In this video, we share an example of how a TOD account can - accidentally - cause family conflict, hurt feelings, and unintended outcomes. Mom sets up a small brokerage account as a Transfer on Death account for her daughter. Mom thought she was making a thoughtful gesture. Years later, inadvertently, most of her liquid assets ended up in the TOD account. When Mom passed away, two-thirds of her estate went directly to one child, bypassing the original plan. Transfer on death accounts can be a great tool. But it's important to understand the potential pitfalls, as discussed in this video focusing on estate planning.
