In this episode, I walk you through everything you need to know before sleeping in your electric vehicle—from preparation and safety gear to cabin setup and driving efficiency. We start by preparing the BYD Atto 3 for an overnight stay, including how to optimise the boot space and fold the seats to create a flat sleeping area. One of the standout advantages of the Atto 3 over the BYD Seal is its adjustable boot floor, which eliminates the need for extra padding like gym mats—making it far more practical for in-car camping. I also break down the essential gear I bring on every EV road trip: a portable power station, a full emergency safety kit (including hazard lights, first aid, and a 12V jump starter), and charging solutions like the standard 1.7kW charger and a 30m extension cable. This setup allows flexible charging options whether you're at a campsite or even a standard wall outlet. On the road, we track real-world efficiency, starting at 94% charge with a dynamic range of 440km, and arriving at the campsite after a 131km drive with 50% battery remaining. This gives a practical look at EV range performance under typical driving conditions using eco mode and regenerative braking. Once at the campsite, I demonstrate how to configure the interior sleeping layout. Due to the compact SUV design, the sleeping orientation differs from the BYD Seal—requiring pillows at the boot and feet toward the front seats for optimal comfort. I also show a simple trick using the headrests to extend support and improve sleep quality. This is Episode 1 of the EV camping series.
