Full Marktcheck episodes, including subtitles, are available in the media library: http://x.swr.de/s/13zv By the way: Since Marktcheck belongs to SWR, you can download this video for free via Wi-Fi and watch it offline while you're out and about! --------- BIKE LOCKS UNDER TEST Diana, Martin, and Simone from Stuttgart are testing three different bike lock models for us: -Two chain locks from Trelock and Prophete. -Two U-locks from Kryptonite and Fischer. -And two folding locks from ABUS and Decathlon's own brand, Elops. The first differences are in weight. The lightest lock is the inexpensive chain lock from Prophete, weighing around 800 grams. The heaviest is the U-lock from Kryptonite. Together with the bracket and cable, it weighs almost 1.5 kilograms. In terms of handling, our cyclists would opt for chain locks. They found them the most convenient to lock their bikes with. BICYCLE LOCKS IN LABORATORY TESTING We also had the locks tested in the laboratory, at the materials testing institute at the University of Stuttgart. The testers arrived with bolt cutters, a saw, and an angle grinder. Could the locks withstand this? All the locks have a medium to high security rating. But are these ratings even comparable? "It's very difficult for users to assess a lock's security level. Some have a rating of three out of six, others ten out of fifteen. There are no binding criteria by which the respective manufacturers classify them, and so everyone has their own standard," explains Siegfried Gerber. PULL TEST: AT WHAT FORCE DOES A BICYCLE LOCK BREAK? The Prophete chain lock breaks at just 1.7 kilonewtons. The Kryptonite U-lock performs best, breaking only at 26 kilonewtons. A bicycle thief could hardly exert that much force in practice. CUTTING A BICYCLE LOCK WITH BOLT CUTTERS Bolt cutters are a typical tool often used by bicycle thieves. Which lock can be cut through without difficulty? The Prophete chain lock performs worst. The two folding locks from Abus and Elops fare significantly better. Only one lock is even stronger: "With the Kryptonite lock, we had to stop the test at around 20 kilonewtons. And the cutting edges couldn't even penetrate the hardened material," explains Siegfried Gerber. This positive result, however, only applies to the U-lock itself – not to the included cable, which could be easily cut. CONCLUSION In the crucial security category, the two chain locks from Prophete and Trelock performed worst. Better: the U-lock from Fischer. The two folding locks from ABUS and Elops make it significantly more difficult for thieves. And especially the U-lock from Kryptonite. Our price-performance winner: The Elops folding lock from Decathlon, priced at just under 40 euros.
