Bacillus (Part 1) - Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology

In this lecture, we discuss Bacillus and briefly, Paenibacillus. I present an in-depth description of how B. anthracis (the agent of anthrax) can present clinically in a variety of veterinary species, emphasizing the key safety considerations. A brief mention of the insect pathogens B. thuringiensis and P. larvae is provided. As always, I cover the basic microbiological characteristics, taxonomy, virulence factors, common clinical presentations, sample collection and diagnostic strategies, zoonotic potential and treatment options.
