Gasoline is produced from crude oil, a dark liquid extracted from underground in regions such as Texas, the Persian Gulf and the Campos Basin in Brazil. This oil undergoes a process called fractional distillation, carried out in refineries. In this process, the oil is heated at high temperatures until it turns into vapor, which rises through a tower where different components are separated according to their boiling points. Gasoline is one of the lightest fractions, and is captured in the upper parts of the tower. After distillation, gasoline still undergoes chemical processes such as cracking and catalytic reforming, which adjust its composition to improve engine performance. Additives are also added to help it burn cleaner and more efficiently, in addition to controlling the octane rating, which indicates the resistance to detonation in the engine.
