Here, he's portrayed as a mischievous, rude, and cruel ghost who takes his responsibilities too seriously. In the cartoon, Beetlejuice's character is very different from the one portrayed in the film. Instead of an outright villain, we're shown more of an anti-hero who still behaves quite vilely and defiantly.
