Eva Perón — Święta biednych czy architektka dyktatury
Eva Perón – a woman who rose from provincial poverty to the pinnacle of Argentine power without holding any official position. The illegitimate daughter of a small-time administrator from the Argentine pampas, she became, in just a few years, the most powerful figure in the country, an icon of the labor movement, and the object of a cult comparable only to religion. Who was Evita really? A defender of the poor or an architect of an authoritarian regime? A saint of the descamisados or a ruthless politician building a system of total control? This documentary is over an hour of insightful storytelling about one of the most fascinating and controversial figures of 20th-century history. The film begins with Eva's childhood in Los Toldos and a traumatic experience at her father's funeral, which shaped her character and fueled a lifelong ambition. We follow her journey through provincial Junín, where as a teenager she dreamed of an acting career, to Buenos Aires, where, at sixteen, with no money or education, she began her struggle to survive in the ruthless world of the capital's entertainment industry. We learn about her gradual rise in radio and cinema, her strategic networking, and the meeting that changed everything – a charity evening at Luna Park, where she sat next to Colonel Juan Domingo Perón. The film offers a detailed examination of the turbulent political events of Argentina in the 1940s and 1950s: coups d'état, the rise of Peronism, the mass demonstration of October 17, 1945, and Perón's rise to the presidency. We examine Eva's role as First Lady – her European tour known as the Rainbow Tour, the fight for women's suffrage, the creation of the Eva Perón Foundation, and the construction of a powerful propaganda machine. We also discuss the darker aspects of Peronism: press censorship, persecution of the opposition, extortion of donations to foundations, and systematic indoctrination in public schools. The final part of the film is devoted to the dramatic circumstances surrounding Eva's illness and death at the age of thirty-three, including the controversial hypothesis that a lobotomy was performed at Perón's behest. The film concludes with the extraordinary story of the posthumous fate of Evita's embalmed body—a twenty-six-year odyssey encompassing the theft of her remains by the military, secret burials on three continents, kidnappings and political assassinations, and finally her final burial at Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, surrounded by the mausoleums of the very oligarchy Eva fought against throughout her life. The film presents diverse historical perspectives and interpretations, avoiding definitive judgments. The material is based on documentary sources, witness accounts, and the findings of historians.
