Roof of the World |S2-EP12| PART 1

S2 – EP12 | PART 1 — ENTERING TIBET G214 to G318 | Honglashan Pass | 13,780 Feet This was the day we had all been waiting for, the day we officially crossed from Yunnan Province into Tibet. After capturing the spectacular scenery with my drone, I packed the motorcycle, but just as I was about to begin the ride, I realised I had made a serious blunder, I had forgotten to pack my high-altitude medicine. At the same time, I noticed the first possible symptom of altitude sickness beginning a cough. Knowing that I was about to ride even higher into the mountains made this mistake feel much more serious. I collected my Tibet Travel Permit and began riding towards the border. I left slightly earlier than the rest of the group, so for a while, I was riding alone and ahead of everyone. Entering Tibet was completely different from crossing any previous provincial border. The rules were extremely strict, and every rider had to arrive at the checkpoint together with the guide. Our passports, Chinese driving licences and travel permits were carefully checked, and the entire process took more than an hour. It was hot and UV was very high at checkpoint. Once we were finally cleared, I crossed the checkpoint and officially entered Tibet, another major milestone in my Australia to Pakistan motorcycle journey. Not long after entering Tibet, I saw three women stranded beside the road with a flat tyre. They waved for me to stop, and there was no way I could ignore them. I pulled over and helped them change the tyre. To thank me, they gave me some dried apricots, which became very useful later because I had eaten almost nothing for breakfast, only a small carton of milk and a little cake. The journey continued through breathtaking mountain landscapes along the legendary G214, taking us towards the famous G318 Sichuan Tibet Highway, considered one of China’s most beautiful and challenging roads. Along the way, I also visited the remarkable Ancient Salt Fields, where generations of local people have continued the traditional method of producing salt in the mountains. This is where Part 1 ends. In Episode S2 EP13 – Part 2, the journey continues from the top of Honglashan Pass. You will witness the extraordinary view that left me speechless, followed by the next stage of our ride towards Mangkang and the legendary National Highway G318.
