Because we're not just talking about arrogance or ego, we're talking about manipulating people, emotionally exploiting others, humiliating people who cared about him, or even betraying his own family to get what he wanted. And the worst part is that many times Malcolm knew perfectly well that he was doing something horrible… and he did it anyway.
