The proposed constitutional amendment (PEC) that reduces the work week from 44 to 40 hours and guarantees two days off was approved in the Chamber of Deputies with 461 votes in favor. However, it reached the Senate and stalled. To date, the proposal remains on the desk of the Senate President, Davi Alcolumbre. Meanwhile, the opposition in the Senate presented an alternative PEC that goes in the opposite direction: instead of reducing the work week, it creates an hourly work system where rights such as vacation pay, 13th-month salary, and FGTS (Brazilian severance fund) would be calculated proportionally to the hours worked.
