Leben an der Berliner Mauer 1981 | Alltag in Westberlin, Kreuzberg | Teil 2

This archival material offers fascinating insights into the everyday lives of Berliners living directly on the Berlin Wall in the 1980s. Despite the wall, barbed wire, and watchtowers, people refused to let it diminish their sense of community. While Allied military patrols patrolled the border paths along the wall, Berliners used these paths for leisurely bike rides and relaxed horseback riding. According to statistics from the West Berlin police, the 165.7 km long "death strip" was equipped with 280 watchtowers and 137 bunkers. Alongside these menacing structures, however, numerous flourishing allotment gardens sprang up right next to the wall, providing a green oasis of refuge for West Berliners.
