For decades, she was in the shadow of her brilliant daughter-writer – if Olena Pchilka was remembered at all, it was mostly as Lesya Ukrainka’s mother. However, it was time to sharpen her focus and change the lens. It was no coincidence that Oksana Zabuzhko called her the mother of Ukrainian nationalism. Olena Pchilka’s uncompromising and principled stance in upholding the Ukrainian language and identity still remains the best example to follow. She edited literary and socio-political magazines, translated into Ukrainian, and wrote works for children and adults. A significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian ethnography was the study of Ukrainian ornament. Olena Pchilka’s passion for folk patterns was not only theoretical – she became a powerful ambassador of embroidery, introducing the fashion for embroidered Ukrainian shirts in Kyiv at that time.
