How does a pulley system work to lift loads with less effort? I built a wooden prototype to see how it works. This pulley system is a mechanism that uses four grooved wheels (pulleys) and a rope or cable to make lifting heavy loads easier, either by changing the direction of the applied force or by reducing the magnitude of the force needed. Force reduction: By combining fixed and movable pulleys in a system (block and tackle), the load is distributed among multiple segments of rope, significantly reducing the force a person must apply.
