Aberdeen Falls – Nuwara Eliya District, Sri Lanka Height: 98 meters Location: Near Ginigathhena, in the Kehelgamuwa mountain range, Nuwara Eliya District Water Source: Kehelgamuwa Oya (a tributary of the Kelani River) Overview Aberdeen Falls is one of the most stunning waterfalls in Sri Lanka, plunging from a height of 98 meters through lush forest. It gets its name from the Scottish city of Aberdeen, a nod to Sri Lanka's colonial past. The waterfall forms from the Kehelgamuwa River, which joins the Maskeli River at Kalugala, and later flows into the Kelani River that empties into the sea. Although water flow has been reduced due to the Norton Bridge Dam (part of the Lakshapana hydroelectric project), the waterfall usually maintains its flow except during extended droughts. Folklore & Legends A local legend tells of a secret tunnel connecting Aberdeen Falls to the nearby Lakshapana Falls. The supposed entrance to this tunnel is said to lie near the Puna River. How to Reach Aberdeen Falls Aberdeen Falls is situated about 6 km from Norton Bridge, within reach of several surrounding towns including Maskeliya, Ginigathhena, Lakshapana, and Norton Bridge. There are multiple access routes to reach the falls: Route 1: Via Dehigasthenna (Easiest Route) From: Maskeliya How: Take the Maskeliya–Dehigasthenna road. Trek: About 2 km walk (~45 minutes). Start Point: Near the Abayawardhanaramaya Temple in Dehigasthenna village. Note: This is the most recommended and least challenging trail. Route 2: Via Kalawelldeniya From: Norton Bridge → Kalawelldeniya (by bus or vehicle) Trek: About 1 km from the 3rd mile post. Caution: This trail has rough terrain and leeches, especially after rain. Route 3: Via Ella Uda (Scenic View Route) From: Ginigathhena town → Ella Uda → Alagala village (in Hulanwanguwa area) View: Falls are visible from a distance here, although this is not the primary access route to reach the base. Route from Nuwara Eliya Option 1: Longer but Scenic Via: Nuwara Eliya → Kaluwala → Avissawella → Ginigathena → Ella Uda Distance: ~115 km Travel Time: 3–4 hours Option 2: Shorter Route Via: Nuwara Eliya → Thalawakele → Hatton → Watawala → Norton Bridge Distance: ~60 km Travel Time: Around 2 hours Best time to visit Ideal Season: After monsoon (April–October) when the waterfall is full and lush. Avoid: During severe drought or heavy rain due to slippery paths and reduced flow. Seasons to Visit For those who simply wish to see the falls, a simple observation platform is located above the natural pool, and the area is best visited between October and November. The area is driest between January and March.
