It was one of the major battle of the 2nd Anglo-Maratha War. On 23rd September 1803, An outnumbered British Force under Major General Arthur Wellesley defeated a combined Maratha army of Daulat Rao Scindia and the Raja Bhonsle of Berar near Assaye in western India. This was Wellesley’s first major victory and overnight it made him famous across the British world. Later he went on to lead the British force against Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo. But he stated that Battle of Assay was his greatest victory ever. Wesley later became the Duke of Wellington and went on to become the Prime Minister of England.
