In this issue, we talk about the First World War - an event that often finds itself on the margins of Ukrainian historical memory, although it was it that largely determined the trajectory of the 20th century. We discuss how the Great War differed from previous conflicts: the total mobilization of societies, the disappearance of the line between military and civilian, the use of industrial technologies and new types of weapons. Together with historian Mykola Hlibishchuk, we discuss the causes of the war, the role of propaganda and public sentiment in Europe on the eve of 1914, and why the Eastern Front is often overshadowed by the Western Front in popular history. We will separately discuss the importance of Ukrainian territories in this war, the resources that were critically important for the warring states, and the role of the war as a “window of opportunity” for peoples without their own state.
