Grandma Sunny Day in Mountain Village. Homemade Varenyky, Garden Work and Traditional Weaving

Welcome back to the beautiful Carpathian Mountains, where Grandma Maria lives a simple and hardworking life in a remote Ukrainian village. This warm and sunny morning begins with a simple homemade breakfast. Since Grandma Maria lives alone and has many things to do every day, she prefers fresh and nourishing food without complicated recipes. Today, she eats bread, cheese, butter, ham, and a bowl of soup before starting another long day of village work. After breakfast, Grandma Maria goes outside to take care of her garden. She removes weeds, loosens the soil, checks the young vegetables, and carefully examines her future harvest. To gather fresh vegetables at the end of summer and in autumn, the work must begin in early spring. The climate in the Carpathian region brings plenty of rain, so the soil usually has enough moisture. But grass and weeds also grow very quickly. Grandma Maria uses traditional tools — a hand scythe, a hoe, and a rake — to keep the large territory around her house clean and tidy. She cuts the grass by hand, gathers old branches and roots, and carries everything to a compost pile. Nothing useful is wasted in a traditional village household. Organic materials become compost, food scraps can be given to animals, and freshly cut grass can be dried or used around the farm. When the weather stays sunny and windy for several days, Grandma Maria also waters the garden to protect the young plants. Living in a mountain village means paying attention to the land every single day. Later, Grandma Maria returns to her kitchen to prepare traditional Ukrainian varenyky with cottage cheese. She mixes flour, water, sunflower oil, and salt to make a simple dough. Then she rolls it out on a large wooden board, cuts it into equal pieces, and carefully fills each one with cheese. Grandma Maria cooks the varenyky on her traditional wood-burning stove. She places them one by one into a large pot of boiling water and gently stirs them so they do not stick together. After only a few minutes, the fresh homemade varenyky are ready to eat. But cooking and garden work are not Grandma Maria’s only skills. Inside her home stands an old traditional loom. Using real wool, she creates handmade Hutsul blankets and other woven items decorated with beautiful patterns. Traditional weaving is a slow and technically difficult process. Every piece requires patience, experience, and many hours of careful work. Grandma Maria uses wool of different colors and sometimes creates special items to order. Similar handmade products can still be found at traditional markets in the Carpathian region.
