An Introduction and Contextualization of “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” This lecture provides an introduction and contextualization of Harriet Jacobs’s 1861 “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.” Not meant as an overview of Jacobs’s life, nor as an analysis of the entire book, this lecture serves to underscore the context of its publication as well as catalyzing a first-time reader’s interest. While “Incidents” is now one of the most-read slave narratives, for nearly a century the book had fallen from the public eye until the work of Jean Fagan Yellin brought this important autobiography to a wider audience.
