Kambodschas schwimmende Dörfer - Umzug auf dem Tonle Sap (ARTE 360° Reportage)
On Southeast Asia's largest lake, the vast Tonle Sap, thousands of people live in harmony with the seasons, adapted to the lake's natural cycle. They reside permanently in houseboats on the water. Entire villages have adapted their lives to the Tonle Sap's extremely fluctuating water levels. The rhythm of the seasons demands that they move again and again – everything and everyone has to go with them. A film by Martin Schacht © 2023, licensed by MedienKontor / ARTE Subscribe to wocomoTRAVEL: https://goo.gl/tIk2Qc Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo The water level of the Tonle Sap lake fluctuates by up to eight meters. Now, during the dry season in February and March, the level drops significantly. Near the shore, forests emerge from the water, crisscrossed by countless sluices and natural channels. For the floating villages, it's now time to move and renovate. Entire villages are relocating, following the water level as always – further out onto the lake, where the channels are deeper and thus serve as waterways for boats year-round. The inhabitants live from fishing and, now that the water is receding, revealing fertile alluvial plains, also from agriculture. The low water level – here at their previous mooring – is also suitable for renovations, as one can stand on the bottom. The Yol family is also caught up in the moving frenzy. Two of their houses are already at the new mooring, and the remaining four are expected to follow in the coming days. 73-year-old Beun is the head of a large family. As always, he is organizing the relocation of the floating family homes. It's an annual cycle, adapted to nature. The people live from fishing or crocodile farming. Every spring, everything on the Tonle Sap is in motion. Even elaborate wedding celebrations are held on the lake. And this despite the fact that the water level drops considerably at this time of year. Every helping hand is needed on the Tonle Sap right now. Tone Sap #arte #tonleslap #camboggan
