Why Is This Famous Route 66 Stop at Amboy (Almost) Empty?

Roy’s Motel & Café in Amboy, California is one of the most iconic stops on historic Route 66—but when I visited, it felt surprisingly empty. Why? This is Route 66 Episode #8, where we explore the famous “ghost town” of Amboy, CA—often seen in movies and known for the legendary Roy’s neon sign, gas station, and motel. Amboy has a fascinating story. The town was purchased in 2005 by Route 66 enthusiast Albert Okura, who restored the iconic sign and reopened the gas station. Although Okura sadly passed away in 2023, his son Kyle continues working to bring the café and cabins back to life. Today, Amboy sits in a unique in-between state—part restored, part abandoned—which makes it one of the most intriguing stops along Route 66. We also check out nearby Amboy Crater National Natural Landmark and find a great dispersed boondocking spot in the Mojave Desert. ✈️ The dirt airstrip next to Roy’s has even been used by pilots like Harrison Ford.
