Checking out the Two-Story Outhouse in Gays, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Friday, June 16 2023, I drive around the village Gays, IL to see what's going on. The most distinctive feature of Gays is a two-story outhouse built in 1869. It was part of a structure with a general store on the ground floor and apartments above. Each level has two seats, so the outhouse could be used by four people at a time. When the general store was torn down in 1984, the owner of the property saw the uniqueness of the bathrooms and took care to leave them standing. Presently, the stacked outhouse is no longer open to the public, and in fact there is no direct way to access the higher level. The Two-Story Outhouse is known to locals as the “skyscrapper". Today, "The Two Story Outhouse Committee" organizes local events for the residents to engage such as The Two Story Outhouse Festival, The Two Story Outhouse Car Show, rummage sales, and breakfast fundraisers. As of the census of 2020, there were 218 people residing in the village, down from 281 in 2010. #driving #drivingtour #travel
