The 9th of Muharram (Tasu'a) is the day before Ashura and holds great significance in Shia Islam because it marks the final day before the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions at Karbala. What happened on the 9th of Muharram? On this day, the army of Umar ibn Sa'd prepared to attack Imam Husayn (a.s.). Orders came from Ibn Ziyad not to delay the battle any longer. When the enemy advanced, Hazrat Abbas (a.s.) approached them on behalf of Imam Husayn (a.s.). Imam Husayn (a.s.) requested one final night so that he and his companions could: Pray to Allah, Recite the Holy Qur'an, Seek forgiveness, Spend the night in worship. Imam Husayn (a.s.) said: "I love prayer to my Lord, the recitation of His Book, abundant supplication, and seeking His forgiveness." This night became one of devotion, patience, and complete submission to Allah. Importance of Hazrat Abbas (a.s.) The 9th of Muharram is especially associated with Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.), the standard-bearer of Imam Husayn (a.s.). He displayed unmatched loyalty, courage, and obedience to the Imam.
