Nearly nine million euros of taxpayers' money to make Katharina Reiche more likable. According to a Forsa poll, three-quarters of all Germans consider the Minister of Economic Affairs a poor choice for the job. Only one in seven is satisfied with her performance. Many perceive the CDU politician as cold, distant, and unapproachable. The solution? Up to 8.8 million euros from the public purse. Stern magazine has revealed that Reiche hired the advertising agency Scholz & Friends and the communications company FGS Global back in February. The contract initially runs for two years at 2.2 million euros per year – and can be extended twice by one year each time. And none other than Joachim Koschnicke, once the PR architect of the Merkel brand and the strategist behind the asymmetric demobilization that has politically stifled the country, works at FGS Global. Now he's supposed to rescue the Reiche brand. The absurdity of it all: Reiche already has 45 employees in the areas of press office, public relations, social media, and online communications alone. And yet, external agencies are now being added on top of that. The 630 members of the German Bundestag have just waived their monthly allowance increase of €497 – in light of economic stagnation and the general mood in the country. The money saved for the entire Bundestag for one year? Nearly €3.75 million. A guaranteed two-year campaign? €4.4 million. In the worst-case scenario, €8.8 million – more than double the amount the Bundestag waived. And all this from a minister who actually stands for a free market economy, personal responsibility, and a lean state. A minister who harshly criticized the energy transition in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. A minister who says the state should stay out of it – and then uses public funds to polish her own image. A political symbolism that could hardly be more devastating.
