Defining "peak health" via sensory cues: Ayurveda's pre-existing work
I asked @jessicavellela about ayurveda’s vision of “full vibrant health” - how do they define the goal state, svastha? what level of health challenge is “just part of life” versus what is an indication of an addressable underlying problem? some basics include: allergies, food sensitivities, energy issues etc are early warning signs of something that might compound. also full health includes emotions + ‘a sparkle in your eye’. (something we don't get into: as a bodyworker, I know that ayurveda has long lists of textural qualities associated with “healthy tissue” that I am keen to learn, and we didn’t even mention.) so “the set of challenges that are actually addressable” is definitely bigger than what western medical has learned to resolve. and Jess has done something very very hard, and studied diligently enough to learn to resolve a good chunk of them. I’ve got this scattered throughout lots of my tweets but now it’s on video too 😊 0:25 - svastha is very systematic! checks for "ranges of operation", though impressively does this all via sensory cues, not molecular measurements. 1:30 - reflecting back to two years ago, when I wondered if some level of struggle / distress after eating was simply normal 3:15 - Q: what are some things Jess sees people assume are "just how life is" that are actually ayurvedic signs of imbalance? A: many over-the-counter medications (antihistamines, sleep aids, allergy meds) are not suppose to be happening in the first place. also we did not mention this, but, food sensitivities! 4:20 - letting in the enormity of: these signs and symptoms actually want something real from us, in terms of diet + lifestyle shifts. as far as I can tell, there isn't actually another option, it's either that or decline? 6:10 - If you look at 10 randomly sampled people on the street, what does the "most svastha" of them look like?
