A female employee of a sticker shop in Osaka Prefecture has been arrested on suspicion of possessing counterfeit versions of these stickers with the intent to sell them. Kansai TV conducted an exclusive interview with the shop before the raid. A shop employee stated that they were selling "original products" imported from China, not genuine products, and made the self-serving claim that they were not aware of any illegality because they "never said they were genuine." We investigated the reality of the situation. ■Popular "Bonbon Drop Stickers" Continue to Be in Shortage On the 10th, the Osaka Prefectural Police raided "5 Little Pigs," a sticker shop in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture. Akiko Minowa (42), an employee of the shop, was arrested on the spot on suspicion of possessing counterfeit "Bonbon Drop Stickers" and other items with the intent to sell them. According to the police, "Bonbon Drop Stickers," characterized by their puffy shape, are considered to have sparked the "sticker boom." These stickers, popular with both adults and children, are also known as "Bonbon Drop Stickers" and remain in short supply. However, counterfeit versions of these stickers are rampant. In April of this year, the owner of a card shop in Umeda, Osaka, was arrested on suspicion of possessing counterfeit goods with intent to sell and received a summary order. ■ "Ponpon" instead of "Bonbon," "Sai" replaced with "O"… Last month, our reporting team visited the shop that was recently raided. The shop was crammed with a huge number of stickers. Some even had descriptions entirely in Chinese. Comparing the stickers sold in the shop to genuine ones… [Reporter's Report] "Looking at the back, the genuine ones say 'Bonbon Drop Stickers,' but if you look closely at the counterfeit ones, they say 'Ponpon Drop Stickers.'" Some say "Ponpon" instead of "Bonbon," and others replace the age rating "Sai" with the katakana character "O." Furthermore, there were significant differences from genuine products, such as printing misalignment and material quality. ■ Claiming to be selling "original products" imported from China, not genuine products When we inquired with the store about selling stickers that looked exactly like the real thing… [Store employee who was raided] "We have a lot of original Chinese products like puffy stickers, but we don't have anything called 'Bonbon Drop'." (Q: So there are no stickers that say 'Bonbon Drop'?) [Store employee who was raided] "It says that, but since it's imported from China, it's an original Chinese product, so it's not genuine." (Q: Is it not trademarked?) [Store employee who was raided] "That's right." They claim to be selling "original products" imported from China, not genuine products. Where exactly did they source them from? [Related to the raided store] "We're importing products directly from factories in China." (Q: How did you meet them?) [Related to the raided store] "Through TikTok. Many of the sellers who stream are Chinese. Currently, we're sourcing from 3 or 4 stores, the cheapest being around 190 yen per piece." They say they source from suppliers they met on social media and sell them in their store. ■ Defiantly denying illegality... When asked if they were aware of the illegality, they responded defiantly: (Q: Do you think it's illegal?) [Related to the raided store] "No. We don't say they're genuine. Even if customers ask if they're genuine, we tell them they're copies. (Customers) buy them because they want them." (Q: Do you feel like you're deceiving people?) [Related to the raided store] "No." They argued that there's "no illegality" because they're selling them while clearly stating they're not genuine. ■ "I knew they were counterfeit when I sold them," the suspect has reportedly admitted to the charges. Meanwhile, on the morning of the 10th, suspect Minowa was preparing to open her shop as usual. However, 30 minutes later… [Reporter's Report] "It's 10:30 AM. People who appear to be investigators entered the shop." Police arrested Akiko Minowa (42) on the spot for violating trademark law. Furthermore, they seized approximately 60 cardboard boxes full of stickers and other items from inside the shop. According to police, the incident came to light in January of this year after a tip was received that "counterfeit Bonbon Drop stickers were being sold." Minowa has admitted to the charges, stating, "I knew they were counterfeit when I sold them." Police are investigating the source of the counterfeit goods in detail.
