The Legend of the Mahakam Dolphin | East Kalimantan Folklore | Indonesian Stories Once upon a time, in the dense forests of East Kalimantan, two brothers lived happily with their father and mother in the village of Muara Montai. However, their happiness turned to misery after their biological mother died and their father remarried. Their greedy stepmother abused the two children, forcing them to work hard gathering firewood and fetching water from the river without feeding them. One day, the stepmother gave the brothers the difficult task of filling a large basket with wood. When they returned, the house was empty—their father and stepmother had abandoned them. Determined, the two unfortunate children entered the forest to search for their father. On their tiring journey, they found the hut where their father lived. Extremely hungry, they ate hot black sticky rice porridge, which caused their bodies to turn hot and black. To cool themselves, they jumped into the Mahakam River and transformed into dolphins.
