Crise de la démocratie en Afrique francophone

Alassane Ouattara in Côte d'Ivoire and Paul Biya in Cameroon both amended the Constitution in order to maintain their positions in power for another term. These actions reflect an authoritarian drift marked by the rise of gerontocracies and military regimes, which are taking hold in several French-speaking African countries; in Togo, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Benin, and the Central African Republic, these regimes are prevailing to the detriment of opposition groups and younger generations. Only Senegal seems to be an exception, maintaining free elections and genuine political change. This period is profoundly at odds with the aspirations of African youth, connected to the world, seeking freedom of expression and political participation. However, this should not be seen as inevitable or a structural trend on the continent, but rather as a transitional phase.
