SOLEDAD | VIVA LA TRADICIÓN | 30 Pueblos: San Antonio de Areco

November 10th was the perfect day to visit San Antonio de Areco. Naturally, on the riverbank near the Old Bridge, the birth of José Hernández was being commemorated (for whom we celebrate National Tradition Day in Argentina): a traditional dance was performed in a circle, with several gauchos on horseback, accompanied by schoolchildren and local authorities. Everyone was celebrating in the land of Ricardo Güiraldes (author of the gaucho novel Don Segundo Sombra, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary!) the birth of Hernández, author of our national poem: Martín Fierro. I visited Bar Tokio, walked the streets towards the Old Bridge, and confirmed that the tradition is more alive than ever. I stopped in the shade of an ombú tree in the Criollo Park and Gaucho Museum, went into La Blanqueada, the legendary general store, to listen to live music, and I hope we never lose the tradition of payador singing—thank you, Nico Membriani, for your contribution! I headed back towards the city center, and on a corner, inside its arcade, Miguel Ángel Gasparini welcomed me into his open and free-flowing space… Hugs, evocations of tradition, on a day in 2026… which is proving to be a very special year for me because I'm celebrating 30 years of touring stages and roads in my country and around the world.
