Professor Ruslan Salakhutdinov, CMU, exVP of Research at Meta, Ex-Director of AI Research at Apple
Guest of Honor Academic Series, a monthly event that brings together established scientists from Greater Central Asia from around the world. In this series, guests share their academic journeys, challenges, opportunities, and career-defining moments to help mentor and guide the next generation of scientific leaders from the region. This time, we are honored to welcome Prof Ruslan Salakhutdinov, PhD, UPMC Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, ex-Vice President of Research at Meta, and ex-Director of AI Research at Apple. Prof. Salakhutdinov's research spans deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, multimodal learning, generative AI, and large-scale optimization. He completed his PhD at the University of Toronto under Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” and was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. Through his leadership roles in both academia and industry, he has contributed significantly to modern advances in generative models, multimodal AI systems, and autonomous AI agents. About the Talk: Professor Salahuddinov presented on the future of autonomous AI agents and multimodal intelligence, discussing his research on physical and digital agents, multi-agent systems for long-horizon tasks, and the evolution from early generative models to today's foundation models. He explained the differences between academic and industrial research environments, noting that industrial labs are becoming more closed while academia remains more open, and discussed challenges around computational resources in academia versus industry. The session concluded with a Q&A where participants asked about applications in nuclear power plant control, common sense reasoning in visual language models, educational recommendations for computer science students, and potential collaboration opportunities with the association.
