Subscribe to our channel:    / @seidobudostudies   School: Yagyū Shingan Ryū Hyōhō-jutsu Event: Meiji Jingu Kobudo Demonstration 2018 Date: 03/11/2018 Venue: Meiji Jingu, Nishisando Shibachi Representative: Shimazu Kenji -- PRESENTATION: YAGYŪ SHINGAN RYŪ HYŌHŌ-JUTSU -- The Yagyū Shingan Ryū originated with Ushū Tatewaki Katsuyoshi, but its formalization came later with a man named Takenaga Hayato. Ushū Tatewaki had learned ancient martial techniques and devised from them his own style, which he called Shingan Ryū. A few generations later, Takenaga, who was a Shingan Ryū instructor in the Date Domain (Miyagi Prefecture), decided to move to Edo (Tokyo) and to submit himself to harsh training under Yagyū Tajima no Kami. Upon completing his study, Takenaga received the authorization to use the name “Yagyū” and soon after renamed his school Yagyū Shingan Ryū. Takenaga then returned to the Date Domain and taught his style to the local warriors for the rest of his life. Years later, Oyama Samon became the disciple of Itō Kyūsaburō, a retainer of the Date Domain who was based in Edo and received from him the school’s license of mastery. Matsuo Oriemon, Oyama’s successor in Edo, taught Gotō Yagyūsai who in turn spread the teachings of Yagyū Shingan Ryū in the Kansai area. Gotō later handed down the school to Ōshima Ichigaku in Osaka.
