John Cage: Third Construction
Third Construction (1941) is an undeniable masterpiece. Perhaps no other work for percussion quartet has developed such mystique and performance practice. Here Cage's macro-micro-structural concepts develop great maturity, generating music with unyielding drive. The mathematical rigidity of phrases is loosened, and each player overlays phrase upon phrase. Incredible sonic diversity results. Dropping the piano, Cage's percussion instrumentation explodes, calling upon instruments from around the globe (the Peruvian 'quijade'; the Mexican 'teponaxtle', the Indian cricket callers, etc.). This is joyous celebration -- the whole world as percussive timbre knit together with rhythmic sophistication. -Gregory Beyer Recorded June 2011 at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois Third Coast Percussion: Owen Clayton Condon, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, David Skidmore With Gregory Beyer & Ross Karre Produced by: Gregory Beyer & Brian Brandt Engineered, Edited, Mixed & Mastered by: Dan Nichols, Aphorism Audio Third Coast Percussion would like to thank Gregory Beyer and the Northern Illinois University School of Music, Greg MacAyeal and the Northwestern University Music Library John Cage Collection, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts John Cage Music Manuscript Collection, Professor William Moersch and the University of Illinois Percussin Studio, James Ross, Brad Tubman, Peter Robles, Joseph Genden, Teddy Boys, Samir Mayekar, Sidney K.
